Water resources and efficiency

Waterwise has produced a Think Piece on Water Efficiency and Climate Change. It looks at some of the potential threats posed by climate change to water resources as well as outlining actions to help safeguard water resources against these threats. Not surprisingly, it calls for a scaling up of water efficiency, as well as greater use of SuDS and changes to legislation and regulation.

EA Water Situation reports – memories of 2012 – CIWEM on Water Resources

CIWEM News ‘Whilst reading about 2016 being the warmest year I was prompted to look at the UK’s current position on water resources, something that was also discussed in our Water Resource Panel meeting that took place in London this week. The Environment Agency’s monthly ‘water situation report’ concludes that there is a greater than expected chance of cumulative river flows being below normal or lower at more than four- fifths of the modelled sites at the end of both March and September 2017 – read it in full here. Roughly two-thirds of our reservoir stocks are below normal levels. We will keep an eye on this over the coming months and keep you updated. 2012 is described by many as a ‘lucky escape’ and eventually became the ‘wettest drought in history’ and as such drought has not received much profile recently. There may well be scientific connections between 2016 being a warm year and a potential drought but the final ‘connection’ that I am making here is about connecting our thinking and how one piece of news can and should cause us to ask related questions.
