Business Green ‘More than three-quarters of the public support the use of renewable energy to help meet the UK’s electricity, heating and fuel needs, with over a quarter stating that they strongly support renewable technologies. That is one of the key findings from the latest tracker survey of over 2,100 adults from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, which again confirms that support for renewables and clean technologies has remained remarkably solid since the polling series was launched in early 2012.
The level of support for renewables has remained fairly constant in a range between 77 and 82 per cent, while the proportion of those stating that they oppose renewables has alternated between four and five per cent. The latest survey, carried out in late September, shows that, despite a raft of hostile media stories and criticism of renewables from some politicians, 51 per cent of people claim to support the use of renewables, while 27 per cent claim to strongly support the technology. In contrast, just four per cent oppose and just one per cent strongly oppose.
The survey also reveals that support for different renewables technologies remains broadly in line with previous surveys. Solar technologies led the way with 80 per cent public support, while offshore wind is supported by 74 per cent of people, and marine energy secures the backing of 73 per cent.
