Both the BBC and Private Eye have picked up on the recent publication of a Seasearch report which has investigated the Manacles MCZ area adjacent to Dean Quarry in Cornwall. Proposals to extract rock from the Quarry have been put forward by the proponents of the Swansea Tidal Lagoon. They would like to build a breakwater to facilitate the removal of the rock by sea. To say that the EIA undertaken to investigate the impact of this was inadequate is the understatement of the year. The silence from Government on the future of the Swansea lagoon has been noticeable, nor can the Helm Review of the Cost of Energy be seen as a welcome development.

Seasearch launches major report on the rarity and diversity of the benthic habitat and species within the Manacles Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Since 2015 the project has been co-ordinated with the Marine Conservation Society, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Exeter University and Porthkerris Dive Centre. Manacles MCZ Report Shire Oak Quarries Ltd propose re-opening a disused quarry at Dean near Coverack and St Keverne on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall. Their plan is to turn a small disused quarry into a sea based Superquarry in line with those found in Norway and at Glensanda in Scotland. There are many concerns with the proposed project.

The primary concern is that the project involves construction in the Manacles Marine Conservation Zone and potential further damage by the proposed barge movements.   The findings of a major independent report published on the Manacles Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) seem to contradict data published by Shire Oak Quarries in 2015.  Cornwall Against Dean Superquarry (CADS) welcomes the findings of a major report on the rarity and diversity of the benthic habitat and species within the Manacles Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ).
