National flood resilience review: call for evidence: Consultation description

Defra are seeking published evidence that we can use in the national flood resilience review, announced in December 2015. This call for evidence focuses on the need to carry out an assessment of the damage that extreme rainfall could cause across England. We’re looking for people to tell us about evidence that is already published. This is not a call for views. We are interested in evidence that is available now and can be submitted by our deadline.

The government confirms terms of reference for the National Flood Resilience Review to be chaired by Oliver Letwin. The government today confirmed the terms of reference for the National Flood Resilience Review, which will be chaired by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Oliver Letwin. Established last month following Storm Desmond, the Review will assess how the country can be better protected from future flooding and increasingly extreme weather events.

Lord Krebs has already written to Government offering The Adaptation Sub Committee support in the wake of Cumbrian floods. Unfortunately for Letwin The Adaptation Sub Committee is currently in the process of compiling the second UK Climate Change Risk Assessment which will consider the latest evidence of climate change in the UK, its current and projected impacts, and the potential policy implications. A report covering similar ground is due to be completed in the same time frame. They do publish their reports!

Some people have a memory! Oliver’s track record leaves something to be desired. Letwin was recently criticised  for failing to publish a similar, earlier review promised after the 2013-14 floods.  http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jan/28/uk-government-not-spending-enough-on-flood-defences-poll-finds
