    River basin management plans: update

Proposed update to the river basin management plans (RBMPs) describes progress made.

The water framework directive is a system for getting Europe’s water cleaner. The directive requires an integrated approach to managing water on a river basin basis. It also aims to get the public involved in water management. A river basin district covers an entire river system, including river, lake, groundwater, estuarine and coastal water bodies. Each river basin district (RBD) has a plan to safeguard its waters to protect human health, water supply, natural ecosystems and biodiversity.

For each of these plan areas there is the following documentation:

    • The River Basin Plan
    • Part 2 RBP – Planning details and additional information
    • An impact assessment
    • The Strategic Environmental Assessment SEA
    • The Habitat Regulations Assessment HRA
    • Accessing data and information
    • A Glossary

Actions taken in response to the plan consultations

This sets the backdrop to the publication of the RBMPs and FRMPs in December.

The acting on your responses to the draft update document shows how the Environment Agency used the responses received. This document is a joint response for river basin management plans (RBMPs) and flood risk management plans (FRMPs). It summarises the main themes raised during both consultations and states how those responses shaped the updated plans and will influence delivery of those plans for the next cycle.

The updated plans will be published in December 2015. The Environment Agency submitted the proposed updated plans to ministers for approval on 30 October 2015.
