Wales Better River Quality Taskforce launches action plans

    NewsWater

The Wales Better River Quality Taskforce action plans have been launched, which will lead efforts to improve public understanding of storm overflows in Wales and their impact on river water quality.

CCW – along with Afonydd Cymru – will be providing independent advice and scutinising the work of the taskforce, which includes Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, Hafren Dyfrdwy and Ofwat.

The taskforce will also develop a package of advice and tools for consumers on how they can play their part in protecting sewers from blockages and misconnections.

Mike Keil – CCW’s Senior Director of Policy, Research and Campaigns, said:

“People in Wales feel passionately about enjoying local rivers, streams and coastlines, and want to see them protected for generations to come.”

“Our People and the Environment programme is calling for greater transparency and public access to information about the health of our rivers, particularly the use of storm overflows and the discharge of sewage into our waterways. We’re pleased to be part of the Better River Water Quality taskforce and welcome the group’s work in addressing these issues, engaging people in action that will result in healthier rivers and streams for the benefit of people and nature.”

CCW will also be setting up a Citizens’ Forum for England and Wales giving people the chance to shape actions plans that ensure all of us understand the value of water and the environment. We are also preparing a series of environment-focussed podcasts exploring river water quality as part of our wider campaign plans.
