According to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, in 2010-2019 average annual global greenhouse gas emissions were at their highest levels in human history. it says immediate and deep emissions cuts are needed to keep global warming to 1.5°C.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called the latest IPCC report “a litany of broken climate promises”. “We are on a fast track to climate disaster: major cities under water, unprecedented heatwaves, terrifying storms, widespread water shortages, and the extinction of a million species of plants and animals,” he said. “Some government and business leaders are saying one thing, but doing another. Simply put, they are lying. And the results will be catastrophic.”

However, on a positive note, the report says there is increasing evidence of climate action and the rate of growth has slowed.

According to the IPCC, since 2010, there have been sustained decreases of up to 85% in the costs of solar and wind energy, and batteries. In addition, an increasing range of policies and laws have enhanced energy efficiency, reduced rates of deforestation and accelerated the deployment of renewable energy.
