Business Green ‘Featuring Sir David King and the IEA’s Fatih Birol, new group plans to offer regular warnings and policy advice on the urgent need to combat climate breakdown

More than a dozen heavy-hitters from the worlds of climate science, economics, and policy development are teaming up to launch an independent expert group this week, in a bid to provide criticism, advice, and warnings to policymakers worldwide on the urgent need for bolder action to combat the climate crisis.

The Climate Crisis Advisory Group (CCAG) will warn that current climate targets worldwide are badly insufficient, and that nations need to drastically strengthen their decarbonisation pledges to deliver on the goals of the Paris Agreement. The group is also calling for critical investment and accelerated research to both reduce emissions and remove CO2 from the atmosphere, as well as adapt to the now inevitable impacts of the changing climate.

“We are calling for urgent, large-scale action to curb the effects of climate change,” the CCAG wrote on Twitter yesterday, setting out its three-pronged approach to reduce emissions, remove emissions, and repair parts of the world’s damaged climate systems.

The new group is being led by Sir David King, the UK government’s former chief scientific advisor and special representative for climate change, who is founder and chair of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge University.

Its 14 members represent 10 countries from around the world and every continent, including leading figures such as International Energy Agency (IEA) executive director Fatih Birol and renowned environmental scientist Johan Rockström, director of The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

The initiative is modelled on Independent SAGE (Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies) – the group of leading scientists set up by King last year to provide advice to the UK government and the public on the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic – but will take a global approach to climate advice, the group said.

The first monthly meeting of the CCAG is set to be livestreamed on Thursday (27th June), hosted by TV presenter Ade Adepitan – who recently fronted a BBC series on the impacts of climate change worldwide – with the group promising to offer warnings on the current state of the climate as well as policy advice.’
