Biden intends to rejoin the Paris Agreement

The world’s second biggest emitter officially left the Paris Agreement at midnight on November 4th, three years after Donald Trump withdrew. Before the election result had been called, a confident Biden tweeted that he would bring the US back into the Agreement on his first day in office. If the Biden-Harris administration’s climate policies are realised, the goals of the Agreement will be “within striking distance” according to the Climate Action Tracker. Biden’s strong climate stance on the global stage will also turn up the heat in countries like Australia, whose leaders have benefitted from four years of a powerful climate-denying ally in the White House. Here’s former head of the UNFCCC Christiana Figueres literally jumping for joy at the news that the US would be returning to the fold.
