An initiative of 14 serving heads of government to support Sustainable Development Goals for the oceans. The High Level Panel for Sustainable Ocean Economy has commissioned a series of ‘Blue Papers’ to explore pressing challenges of the ocean and economy. The aim is to summarise the latest science and state-of-the-art thinking about innovative ocean solutions in technology, policy governance and finance. This latest paper makes the case for Integrated Ocean Management, identifies existing impediments, and sets out guiding principles. Key messages include strengthening our knowledge of the oceans, encouraging business to be sustainable and effective implementation of international agreements.
