    Climate and nature emergency debate

    MarineNews

Members of the House of Lords debated the case for investing in and embracing a green economy, promoting resource efficiency and zero carbon usage. Speakers included a former trustee of the Waste and Resources Action Programme and the former chief executive of the Campaign to Protect Rural England. Introducing the debate Baroness Parminter referred to both the climate emergency we face as well as a nature emergency.

“If we are to respond effectively to both these emergencies, our whole economy must be re-engineered to a green economy.”

The Government’s Environment Bill commits to setting targets for improving air, water, biodiversity, resource efficiency and waste reduction. There is to be a government review of the UK’s transition to a net-zero economy and how it will be funded, but the findings are not due to be published until the autumn. “It is not only government, central and local, that must act. Businesses of all sizes need to incorporate climate impacts in their decisions and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from their supply chains.” To read the full debate Click here
