More evidence has emerged of the physical and mental health benefits of green infrastructure.

An expert paper from the EU PERFECT (Planning for Environment and Resource efficiency in European Cities and Towns) project helps to make an economic case for the multiple benefits of green infrastructure based on the jobs and growth agenda.

Green infrastructure has a vital role to play in the success of regions across Europe, not least because of its impact in promoting health and happiness. Evidence shows that – as well as the social benefits of a healthier population – there is a great benefit to the economy through increased productivity.

The paper will be used by the partners as they develop their Action Plans, to be published at the end of Phase 1, and promoted to their stakeholders to show the positive impact of multi-functional green infrastructure in creating successful regions across Europe.

Meanwhile, British Land has published a new Design for Life report. It shows that the places where we live and work have a significant impact on our health and wellbeing. Whether or not we are aware, they – and their design – affect what we do, how we do it, and how we feel. Despite this, an understanding of these effects is yet to translate itself coherently to the way that we plan and design our cities. This report defines the value of this opportunity, and identifies a way to put health and wellbeing at the heart of all UK development.
