Brexit with a year to go – Greener UK highlights urgency

    News

With a year to go until exit day, Greener UK highlights urgency

On the anniversary of the Prime Minister’s letter triggering Article 50, Greener UK urged the government to match its “green Brexit” rhetoric with action.

We launched a new briefing which sets out the need for ambitious new laws. These should build on the strong foundations of the full body of existing environmental law and result in:

    1. Ambitious and measurable goals for nature’s recovery and a healthy environment.
    2. Strong principles to underpin fair and far-sighted decision making.
    3. Independent institutions to uphold environmental law, champion citizens’ rights and prevent the roll-back of existing environmental protections.

A Westminster Environment Act will be an important part of this, as will relevant legislation in the devolved legislatures.

Relatedly, several Greener UK partners have posted blogs on the importance of a strong green watchdog: ClientEarth, Green Alliance, National Trust, RSPB, WWT, and Woodland Trust. E3G has also published a short briefing paper which calls on the UK and EU to prioritise a co-operation track on climate and energy in Brexit negotiations.
