Reports on the response of marine species to ocean warming

    News

A new collaborative study, published in ‘Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems’, modelled how marine climate change could affect the future establishment of new species in northwest Europe, to enable scientists to understand the potential impacts to anticipate and plan for such establishing populations. Marine species can be accidentally transported via a range of activities but can only become established if environmental conditions are suitable. The study ‘Non-native marine species in north-west Europe: Developing an approach to assess future spread using regional downscaled climate projections’ can be accessed at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aqc.2764/full.

The Foresight Future of the sea project has published ‘Future of the sea: biological responses to ocean warming,’ This report summarises evidence of changing sea temperatures. It explores the current and future impacts of this on:

    • marine life
    • the UK fisheries and aquaculture industries
    • environmental conservation, including the UK’s marine protected area network

It was commissioned as part of the Foresight Future of the sea project.
