York Workshop Reports

Whilst the debris and comment still explodes around Gove’s pronouncements on fisheries, two thoughtful reports have been published which are the outcomes of the York Brexit workshops earlier in the year. York University ‘With Brexit discussions underway, two policy briefs have been published to explore the implications of Brexit for agriculture and fisheries. In the on-going Brexit discussions, agriculture and fisheries stand apart. Whatever kind of Brexit is negotiated, responsibility for agriculture and fisheries will return to the UK.
In light of this, two policy briefs have been funded by the ESRC’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and published as part of the ‘UK in a Changing Europe’ initiative, to explore the implications of Brexit and the options for UK fisheries and agriculture after Brexit in the current political landscape. The reports have been produced by a number of academics from Queen’s University Belfast and the University of York, with support provided by the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
The policy briefs provide an impartial expert review of existing proposals, processes and literature, and are informed by stakeholder workshops which were held with leading influences in environmental conservation, fisheries/agricultural industries, NGOs and academic researchers.
Both reports identify Brexit as providing a unique opportunity to design sustainable and forward-looking policies fit for the 21st century and emphasise the importance of ensuring that environmental protection is of central importance in future management to ensure that food supply remains healthy.’
