The UK Maritime Innovation Hub is emerging as a central point of engagement between innovators and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the agency says in a progress update on its first three months of operation. Since its formal showcase at the Flag Forum in London on 16 April 2026, the Hub has seen a steady increase in enquiries from technology developers, shipbuilders, operators and start‑ups looking to understand regulatory pathways for innovations in autonomy, decarbonisation, digital systems and nuclear propulsion.
What the Hub does
The Hub was launched as part of the Department for Transport’s Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy, published in March 2025, which set targets to cut UK domestic maritime greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2040 on the way to net zero by 2050. It serves as a single point of entry for organisations at any stage of technology development — from early‑stage research through to prototype vessel trials — seeking to navigate regulatory requirements and access MCA expertise.
The service offers tailored support and what the MCA describes as “dedicated account management” to reduce administrative burden, early engagement to lower regulatory risk, and access to designated trial areas within Plymouth Harbour for testing innovative vessel technologies. The Hub draws expertise from across the MCA and is based at the agency’s Spring Place headquarters in Southampton.
Early demand and priorities
In its first quarter, the Hub reports strongest interest around decarbonisation projects, followed by continued activity in autonomy and digital technologies. It has supported applicants to government programmes including the UK SHORE Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition and the Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) round, helping them understand regulatory expectations.
The team has also established a presence across the wider maritime sector through involvement in industry events such as Seawork, Posidonia and the UK Flag Forum. Assistant Director Jonty Slater said the Hub had “quickly established itself as a focal point for maritime innovation”, and emphasised that progress to date had relied on support from colleagues across the MCA, the Department for Transport and wider government, alongside constructive engagement from industry.
Next steps
The MCA says the Hub is now moving into a second phase, building on its first‑quarter foundations to strengthen support for innovators and create a clearer, more consistent route into the regulatory system. Work is also under way on a structured approach to innovative vessel trials within Plymouth Harbour, intended to provide a controlled testing environment for concepts moving from development towards formal regulatory submission.
