Short Course: Law of the Sea – Online Starts 28 September 2026
The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) will once again be convening its flagship short course on the Law of the Sea. This popular course provides a practice-oriented introduction to the international law of the sea and the urgent challenges facing the world’s oceans and seas. Delivered by a mix of academic and practitioner experts, the course offers participants a practice-oriented introduction to the international law of the sea and the urgent challenges facing the world’s oceans and seas. Participants gain a robust working understanding of the main sources of the law of the sea examined and applied across various contexts, from marine environment protection, climate change and vulnerable species management to the governance of global commons, offshore energy and deep-sea mining activities, human rights at sea and, crucially, the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes.
“I gained valuable knowledge about ocean governance, maritime law and coastal state rights and responsibilities. This has strengthened my capacity to contribute to national and regional initiatives related to the Blue Economy and maritime policy development” – Randrianarivelo Julia, Participant in the 2025 edition of the course.
This course is ideal for those working on ocean governance issues or for whose work ocean governance is an important component including those working in government (including national and sub-national government), NGOs, legal practice, companies and academia (including students).
