I recently listened to a great talk on OneBenthic by Keith Cooper from Cefas. It only goes to show what you can do with data if you have the expertise with both the species and habitats … lots of information flowing from this project of direct application to seabed management. Bob Earll

OneBenthic brings together disparate benthic datasets (e.g. seabed macrofauna, sediment particle size) in one cloud-based platform. The resulting high-quality, standardised dataset is used to generate new science, and new innovative and collaborative ways of working. Outputs are shared via open-access publications and a suite of interactive web apps. This big data approach creates an opportunity to do things differently – realising the concept of ‘collect once, use many times’ and using new data science techniques to address questions. This is important given the increasing use of the marine environment and the challenges associated with delivering sustainable development. Find out more here
