An opportunity to join an internationally respected, dynamic and active team conducting and leading on fisheries science, assessments and management advice to national and international marine management organisations including Defra, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the EU, and ICES.

You will be expected to work with national and international scientific and management organisations making a real impact to marine environmental management and policy.

You will have responsibility for designing, developing and utilising population models of both fish and assessments of commercially harvested shellfish stocks.  You will initiate, conduct and develop scientific and statistical assessments of marine data sets and shellfish stocks and the impacts of fishing on the marine ecosystem to provide advice on fisheries and marine ecosystem management to Cefas, Defra and other national and international bodies.

You will oversee and interpret scientific analyses to provide analysis and advice on the assessment of marine fish and shellfish stocks, the marine environment, and associated fisheries and management options. Duties will include the responsibility for development and delivery of shellfish stock assessments, data analysis and ad hoc numerical and statistical modelling, report writing and presentation of results and advice to a wide range of national and international customers. You will be innovative, well-motivated and flexible with good communication skills, you will be capable of both independent working and working within multi-disciplinary international teams.

The role will require statistical and numerical programming, statistical analysis, project management, report writing and presentation skills. A broad understanding of Shellfish biology will be required.

Travel, both domestic and overseas, is to be expected with the possibility of participating in fieldwork.

QUALIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL SKILLS
Academic qualifications required for direct entry to this Cefas Pay band 6 post is a degree or equivalent, with a high level of numerical, mathematical and statistical content or equivalent experience.
You should be skilled in high-level programming and statistical languages (e.g. R / C++).
