Premiam is a cross-government and industry initiative aimed at developing and promoting best-practice application of science and coordination in post-spill environmental monitoring. The Premiam Conference is to provide a forum for scientists, regulators, environmental advisors and other professionals working in the field of marine oil/chemical spill monitoring and impact assessment to share experience, best practice and knowledge with the wider marine emergency response community.

The Premiam initiative is now in its 10th year and this year’s conference theme is ‘Premiam – Looking Back and Moving Forward’.

The full day event will be delivered over three sessions, ‘From Science to Decision Making’, ‘Case Studies’ and ‘Future Premiam’, by speakers across government, industry and academia.

We are also pleased to confirm that the key-note speakers will include Gary Shigenaka (NOAA, USA) who will provide expert reflections on his direct involvement in the response and monitoring of major spills in the US including Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon.

Topics under discussion will include:

  • The new Premiam post-spill monitoring guidelines
  • Data sharing and availability
  • Monitoring to decision making – experience from the UK and international

Case Studies

  • The importance of long-term time series
  • Lessons learned from 50 years of international response (ITOPF)
  • Torrey Canyon, Exxon Valdez, Deepwater Horizon – what have we learnt?
