ESI’s pioneering new study reveals the potential cost to property from the ‘hidden hazard’ of groundwater flooding in England.

  • National mapping shows significant risk from groundwater as part of overall flood risk.
  • Economic loss due to property damage may average £530m per year, approximately 30% of total monetised flood risk
  • A divided regulatory structure and lack of focus on catchment based analysis means large uncertainty exists
  • Groundwater missed from recent Flood Resilience Review and EFRA Select Committee reports
  • Groundwater flood risk also excluded from many insurance policies

ESI has completed national mapping and developed preliminary economic analysis on the risk of groundwater flooding to property and infrastructure. This, combined with other flood risks has now created the first “Flooding from All Sources” dataset using advanced modelling techniques on a 5m grid.
