Chemical Spill Leads To Major Fish Kill In County Down River

Accidental discharge from a treatment works caused the deaths of more than 1,600 fish in a river near Newcastle, County Down, NI Water has said.  It said the “pollution incident” affected the Annsborough River on Saturday afternoon and the cause was identified and rectified shortly after.  The chemical spillage has been cleaned up and there is no further risk to the river, the company said.  NI Water said it would continue to work with the Environment Agency …

Sewage Kills More Than 15,000 Fish In River Trent

A large stretch of sewage pollution in the River Trent has killed more than 15,000 fish according to official estimates. The Environment Agency responded to the incident, after members of the public contacted them about dead fish in the water. The incident is still being investigated, although the source of the pollution is now reported to have been stopped. A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “We are currently dealing with a large stretch of sewage pollution along the River Trent between Hanford in Stoke-on-Trent and the Monkey Forest in Trentham …


Tesco Admits Responsibility For Fuel Leak That Polluted River Irwell

Retailer faces fine after thousands of litres of diesel leaked from petrol station and contaminated 10-mile stretch of River Irwell.

Thousands of litres of diesel leaked underground for up to two days from a pump at one of the supermarket’s petrol stations, seeping into a tributary that feeds into the River Irwell in east Lancashire, in an area popular with anglers.

The company will be sentenced at Preston Crown Court in January.

The prosecutions were brought by the Environment Agency and Lancashire County Council after 23,500 litres of petrol escaped from the filling station in Haslingden between 2 and 3 July 2014 …

More Than 1,000 Fish Killed In River Avon

More than 1,000 fish have been found dead in a polluted Warwickshire river. The cause of the pollution in the River Avon near Wolston is still being investigated.   A spokesman for the Environment Agency (EA) said hydrogen peroxide had been pumped into the river to ensure the oxygen returned to a level that would not harm the fish. Further evidence of pollution has also been found in the rivers Swift and Avon. Tests are taking place. “Our officers are currently sampling and analysing these while continuing to work with Severn Trent to contain and rectify the situation,” an EA spokesman said …

Dairy Farm Ordered To Pay £8,000 For Polluting Sussex River

A controversial energy farm has been prosecuted for spilling effluent into the River Kirk. Crouchland Farms Limited, based off Rickmans Lane in Plaistow, appeared at Worthing Magistrates Court.  At court, the operator pleaded guilty and was fined £4,000, ordered to pay £3,917 and a victim surcharge of £120.  The incident was first brought to the attention of the Environment Agency on December 2 2013.
