Offshore wind industry can transform UK’s east coast port towns into thriving hubs of clean energy construction, bringing jobs and growth to deprived regions.

Business Green: The UK’s offshore wind industry could unlock a wave of economic growth on the east coast, bringing jobs to port towns from Scotland to East Anglia, according to a report published by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult on Friday. In a strategic review of the UK’s east coast port facilities, which was announced by former energy minister Andrea Leadsom in February and led by DONG Energy’s vice president of UK wind power Benj Sykes, the report found 11 east coast ports have the facilities to support a growing pipeline of offshore wind development in the coming decades. Record Year so far for European offshore wind

The European offshore wind industry attracted a record €14 billion in new investments during the first half of 2016, with the UK accounting for nearly three-quarters of the new investments, according to the latest data from wind energy network WindEurope. Seven projects in the UK reached final investment decision this year, financing a total of 3.7GW of new capacity with the UK. The volume of new grid-connected installations in the first six months of 2016 was 511MW, 78 per cent down on the same period in 2015, but WindEurope expects to pick up next year and toward 2020. Giles Dickson, CEO of WindEurope, said: “The record investment numbers show a clear industry commitment to offshore wind. We expect installations will pick up significantly in 2017 but there are a lot of challenges out there still on offshore wind. Not least the uncertainty over future volumes and regulation in many key markets for the period after 2020. We’re a long way from being able to say ‘job done’ on offshore wind.” Click here to read more.
