BCP ‘An inspiring new public education destination dedicated to achieving a step-change in the reduction of waste and elimination of single use packaging along Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s beautiful seafront.

Funded with £2.4 million from the Coastal Communities Fund, the Durley Environmental Innovation Hub will allow both residents and the millions of visitors that flock to our coastal resort every year, to explore and understand the environmental impacts of packaging, waste and climate change on our fragile coasts and seas. With around 2,000 tons of waste removed from Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole’s beaches every year, the hub will take a lead on recycling in public spaces and will be a centre of focus for BCP Council’s efforts to educate and change behaviours along the seafront.

In addition to the hub, the building will house a new kiosk and toilet facilities, together with welfare facilities for essential services linked to the nearby waste transfer yard. This development will be built to high environmental standards, taking into consideration the whole lifecycle of the building. In the education building we are targeting a zero-carbon strategy and Passivhaus accreditation.  The building work is expected to take around 9 months; it is hoped to be finished during summer 2021 in time for the new academic term, covid-restrictions allowing.’
