Greater volumes of water are now involved in the average flood in northern England and southern Scotland than 50 years ago as climate change increases the amount of rainfall, researchers say. While the north of England and the Scottish Borders are hardest hit with water volumes up 55 per cent, the rest of the UK has also suffered with flood water volumes rising between 5 and 25 per cent over the period. The Europe-wide study is published in the journal Nature and involved 24 research institutions including Bath University. Suspicions that climate change was altering the frequency and strength of floods prompted 35 European research groups to examine data on the extent of flooding.
