Bob Earll  The Government have been quick to remind us (again) with a great fanfare that the plastic bag tax works. All it does is remind me how little progress they have made with all the other obvious single use plastics which seemed to be stuck in an endless round of announcements and consultations. The EU have committed to ban a wide range of single use items by 2021. The Wildlife and Countryside Link paper pulls all this together in the context of the next budget.

The Treasury’s consultation, ‘Tackling the plastic problem’ received 162,000 responses, which was record breaking. This highlights the great support for urgent action to tackle the environmental emergency that is plastic pollution. This briefing sets out our proposed solutions to tackling the growing use of single-use plastics (SUPs), a major source of pollution. Solutions for mitigating plastic pollution must prioritise a reduction in the production and consumption of plastics, phasing out all but the safest and most essential SUPs. Click here to read more
