The second project was a major beach regeneration scheme on the Dutch coast, described by Jaan Flikweert of Royal Haskoning DHV. This project – primarily intended to improve coastal flood defences – placed 21.5 million cubic metres of sand at one location and allowed natural processes to transport the sand to where it was needed. The scheme also provided amenities for leisure activities such as walking and kite-surfing, which resulted in local economic benefits. The scheme was well marketed and well supported by all stakeholders. Click here for more information
