A friend, Richard Hanes, who works for Bloomberg (see below) told me about this article showing that the methane produced by cows could be reduced by 99% by eating a red algal supplement.  Click here to read more   The issue of dealing with methane from cattle in relation to climate change is huge and one of the more intractable problems we need to address.

When you see articles like this you tend to pinch yourself and wonder whether it is April the 1st. So I asked Professor Christine Maggs for her views and she wrote, ‘Yes this is genuine research, and was circulated around Algae L about four months or so ago. The species they are talking about is A. taxiformis which is invasive in some parts of the world including the Mediterranean, but not in the British Isles. Our species is A. armata. It probably would have the same effect. What that suggests is that the gut bacterial communities are being affected by the seaweed extracts as a wide range of bioactives are produced by these seaweeds.’
