As 2017 draws to a close, the prospects for the environment look brighter than they did at the start of the year, when the government’s Brexit plans were unclear, and the environmental dimensions even more so. Much remains uncertain and at risk, with the Withdrawal Bill still failing to safeguard all existing environmental protections. But Greener UK has been heartened by steps the government has taken towards addressing some of our concerns.

Looking towards 2018 and phase two of the negotiations with the EU, it is vital that the government prioritises the environment; the co-operation sections of our Brexit Risk Tracker show how important the future relationship with the EU will be for a variety of policy areas. And let’s not lose sight of the facts on the ground: there’s still a pressing need to restore nature within a generation. Brexit can only be ‘green’ if the UK is prepared to put more ambitious environmental goals into law, as we set out in our manifesto nearly a year ago.
