Amazing experiences off Fowey

West country kayaker and adventurer Rupert Kirkwood got lucky just two miles off Fowey in Cornwall during a trip with companions Jeremy and Jane. Having glimpsed a breaching tuna here a couple of days previously, I was absolutely set on making the effort to get one on camera,” Rupert said.

They spotted the tuna breaking the surface two miles south of Fowey and went to investigate. A gang of gulls circled over the school of tuna,” Rupert said. “When they suddenly dipped down to the surface I rattled away with my camera and the giant tuna, bigger than bottlenose dolphin, burst out.” Blue Planet II showed how the tuna, along with dolphins and rays, feed on huge “bait balls” of smaller fish, and the Fowey tuna were in similar hunting mode. “Jeremy and Jane had the thrill of seeing a load of baitfish, which they reckoned were mackerel, bursting from the surface with the tuna exploding out in pursuit,” Rupert said.
