50 years of data from hydrometric stations covering all European countries were assessed in this major study to analyze the timing of flood events. A closer look at the shift in the timing of floods pointed to climate change as the main factor. Later winter storms, heavier summer rains and earlier snowmelts are all evidence of the strong influence of a changing climate on water resources.

Further recent evidence of the growing pressure of climate change came from the Lancet Planetary Health. This found that that water-related disasters could expose two-thirds of Europeans to water-related disasters, in the form of heatwaves, cold spells, wildfires, droughts and floods by the end of the century.
