The Business of Fishing

This 3-day residential training course seeks to bring all who attend on a journey into the what, when and why of fisheries science and management. You will work with other like-minded professionals in a neutral setting to explore and interrogate the processes involved, share insights and build understanding away from the pressures of fishery regulation.

The course has been built with the help of fishermen: it will meet your needs by complimenting your current knowledge whilst providing you with practical opportunities to go deep ‘under the bonnet’ of fisheries science and management. We hope it will stretch your thinking but no in-depth scientific knowledge is needed to enrol; just come with an open mind and a willing spirit. Presenters and project partners are drawn from scientists and managers around Scotland, including: Marine Scotland, Aberdeen University, Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, Scottish White Fish Producer’s Association, Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, Seafish and others. Attendance on the course is free: will cover all travel and accommodation expenses, and other incentives are available to fishermen who complete the course.

Project description

In 2017, our industry is about more than just catching fish. It is a complex business and science is pivotal.

“We need to teach people about yields and why you need to leave fish in the sea”. Mike Park, Chief Executive, Scottish White Fish Producer’s Organisation.

Our Fisheries Resource Education Programme brings together fishermen, scientists and managers to work with the complexities of fisheries science and management in neutral settings away from the pressures of the regulatory process. All parties gain from working together: fishermen become more comfortable working with scientific information and management processes; policy-makers and scientists learn the inner workings and concerns of the fishing community.

New bridges of trust and respect are built and fishermen leave motivated to collaborate further with scientists and regulators, thereby helping to shape the future of their industry. The courses cater for all levels and abilities. There is no need for prior learning – the courses will stretch your thinking but build on your current level of knowledge.
